Waterfall Resort In Alaska Celebrates Local History By Raising Honorary Totem Poles

Waterfall Resort, an established sport fishing destination for almost 25 years, announces that this spring they will raise two honorary totem poles to celebrate historic ties to the Native Alaskan community

Ketchikan, Alaska (IPRWIRE) Mon, Feb. 19th, 2007 -- In honor of its 25th anniversary this spring, Waterfall Resort in Southeast Alaska (www.waterfallresort.com/inm.html) will raise two totem poles carved by the grandson of a Haida chief who presented a totem pole to the Waterfall Cannery in 1937. In a unique tribute to Waterfall Resort’s historic ties to the Native Alaskan community, the Resort has commissioned the totem poles from Lee Wallace, who recently began carving the poles in Saxman Village, just south of Ketchikan, Alaska.

Waterfall Resort, now a nationally recognized sport fishing resort, was home to one of the most productive salmon canneries in the early 1900s. Lee Wallace’s grandfather, John Dewey Wallace, lived in a Haida community near Waterfall and presented a 35-foot totem pole to the cannery superintendent 70 years ago. At that time, most of the fish sold to the cannery came from Native Alaskan fishermen from Hydaburg, Craig, Klawock, Metlakatla, and Ketchikan.

That totem pole stood next to the cannery’s general store for many decades, until it mysteriously disappeared. The totem pole eventually was found in two pieces in Seattle, and a philanthropic group refurbished it and raised it adjacent to the Montlake Cut in Seattle, near the University of Washington.

Lee Wallace decided to interpret his grandfather’s “Story of North Island” in two totems, the eagle and the master carpenter. Photo updates of the carving process will be posted at www.waterfallresort.com/totems.html.

Waterfall Resort also announces that it will open for its 25th season on May 26th, 2007. The 2,300 guests that visit the resort each summer stay in remodeled historic buildings that housed cannery workers nearly 100 years ago. Fishing guides take guests to some of the regions most productive sport fishing locations, where Native Alaskan fishermen have trolled for generations.

An Alaska cruise has traditionally been a “View from afar” type experience. Now AIPR, Alaska Inside Passage Resort, brings the Alaska cruise experience to the front door of your own private yacht

Santa Barbara, CA (IPR Wire) June 23, 2006 -- Alaska's Inside Passage is known as one of the most beautiful areas of the world to cruise with its breathtaking views of wildlife, vast forests, and glaciers. While these can be viewed from a large cruise ship, it cannot be experienced first hand through self-exploration.
With Alaska's Inside Passage Resorts and the Midnight Sun, passengers are surrounded by nature's beauty and grace instead of just viewing it from afar. Cruise Alaska in ultimate opulence and comfort. Passengers will receive personal customer service aboard our privately owned and operated yachts. They will be able to explore Alaska's many fjords and coves that large cruise ships cannot access. Passengers can customize the itinerary to their specifications to personalize their cruise and set their own pace.

The Midnight Sun, one of Alaska's premier private yachts, is under new ownership and management. It is undergoing renovations to make it even more comfortable and luxurious for our guests.
Alaska offers opportunities for luxury Alaska cruises that are second to none. AIPR enables passengers to view the last untouched wilderness of the world firsthand. Our private Alaska cruise will enable to do things like catch crab, shrimp and fish off the deck of your private yacht and let our staff transform it into a gourmet meal. In addition passengers will have Zodiacs and Kayaks at their disposal throughout the entire voyage to get an even closer experience to Alaska nature. The Midnight Sun can accommodate up to six passengers and specializes in cruises between Juneau and Ketchikan. The Midnight Sun offers an experience that is unattainable when enjoying an Alaska cruise on a commercial liner.

Experience all that Alaska has to offer with the Midnight Sun's new owner and captain, Bob Wostmann. Capt. Bob brings with him over thirty-five years of boating experience. Through his twenty-four summers of exploration of Alaska's panhandle, he knows the best locations for adventure. As a certified US Coast Guard Master, our guests are safe and secure under his guidance. Explore shorelines, glaciers, and coves of the inside passage that have been untouched by humans until now.
